History of the COBI Tiger I No. 007 and The Death of German Tank Ace Michael Wittmann on August 8, 1944.:

Michael Wittmann, the legendary German Panzer Ace known for his 139 tank kills, met his end on August 8, 1944, during the Battle of Normandy. Pressed for time in the Falaise Pocket, Wittmann, along with three other Tigers, was ordered to counterattack the advancing British forces. As they moved north, they were unaware of the British tanks waiting in ambush in the orchards. A Firefly tank commanded by Sergeant Gordon engaged the Tigers, taking advantage of their exposed side armor. Despite the Tigers’ deadly 88mm cannon, the Firefly managed to destroy a Tiger, possibly Wittmann’s tank, leading to his death in the battle.

The British tank ambush from the orchards caught Wittmann and his crew by surprise, as they continued their advance unaware of the danger lurking nearby. The Firefly’s powerful 17-pounder cannon proved to be effective against the Tigers, especially when targeting their thinner side armor. As the German tanks moved within range, the Firefly engaged them, potentially resulting in the destruction of Wittmann’s tank. The intense battle and swift actions of the British tankers led to the demise of the famed Panzer Ace, ending his impressive kill streak in World War II.

The debate over who killed Michael Wittmann continues to this day, with conflicting accounts and theories surrounding his death in the Battle of Normandy. Despite his reputation as a skilled tank commander with numerous kills to his name, Wittmann’s final moments in combat remain shrouded in mystery. The ambush from the British Firefly tank, coupled with the chaotic circumstances of the battle, ultimately led to the downfall of the legendary Panzer Ace, leaving a lasting legacy in the annals of World War II history.
