Merkava MK I & II History:
The Merkava (Hebrew: מרכבה‎, “chariot”) is a series of main battle tanks used by the Israel Defense Forces and is the backbone of the IDF’s armored corps. The tank began development in 1970, and its first generation – the Merkava mark 1 – entered official service in 1979. Four main variants have been deployed, with the Merkava mark 4 being the latest version. The Merkava was first used extensively in the 1982 Lebanon War. The name “Merkava” was derived from the IDF’s initial development program name
The tank was developed in the Merkava and Armored Combat Vehicles Division of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, and most of its parts are manufactured in Israel. Its design concept is to provide maximum protection for its crew, and therefore its front armor was fortified and the engine placed in the front part of the tank, unlike most other tanks.
Design criteria include rapid repair of battle damage, survivability, cost-effectiveness and off-road performance. Following the model of contemporary self-propelled howitzers, the turret assembly is located closer to the rear than in most main battle tanks. With the engine in front, this layout is intended to grant additional protection against a frontal attack, so as to absorb some of the force of incoming shells, especially for the personnel in the main hull, such as the driver. It also creates more space in the rear of the tank that allows increased storage capacity and a rear entrance to the main crew compartment allowing easy access under enemy fire. This allows the tank to be used as a platform for medical disembarkation, a forward command and control station, and an infantry fighting vehicle. The rear entrance’s clamshell-style doors provide overhead protection when off- and on-loading cargo and personnel.

Always wanted a Cobi Merkava ever since I saw the old version set (2607). I’m glad they released a newer version as the old one is pretty much unobtainable. Lovely design, easy build, and no missing pieces. Lovely!

Great set. I have liked putting the modern tank sets together. Definitely a different look from the WW2 sets. I would like to see these in a 1:28 scale. Again, Cobi did a good job introducing custom parts and using pad printing to make a more realistic model. Thank you War Bricks for great service!

My first tank! Love the looks, the details, and pad printed parts are way better than stickers.

A good set for sure, solid construction, but not one of Cobi’s strongest.
The turret feels slightly stiff in motion but does still rotate freely, the tracks are smaller than their normal which leads to a slight bit more annoyance during assembly, but they have additional plastic to ensure they won’t fall apart during usage like other small-track sets I’ve seen, and you want to use one more chain linkage than recommended on the turret details because it gets too tight and puts strain on the part that will break it for long-term play and usage, and at least for me, one of the turret hatches doesn’t like to close all the way. (Might be user error though)
Otherwise, it’s a very detailed set, barrel is solidly attached, and all the parts fit snug, a good addition to my own collection of tank vehicles, going on 9 now. It is built solidly enough for long-term play, and is very nicely detailed. Stamped/printed parts help improve the quality and longevity.
I still recommend the set, despite the handful of shortcomings compared to Cobi’s other products.

My son wanted this set. His review: This product is amazing. A few things would make it even better: having a rear troop hatch, perhaps including some figures, and a removable turret to access the inside.
