Northrup Grumman F-5A Freedom Fighter History:

The Northrop F-5 is a supersonic light fighter aircraft. It was initially privately funded by Northrop Corporation in the late 1950s. There are two main models: the F-5A and F-5B Freedom Fighter variants, and the F-5E and F-5FTiger II variants. The design team focused on performance and low cost of maintenance by using two compact and high-thrust General Electric J85 engines. Compared to other fighters of its time, like the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, the F-5 was smaller, simpler, and cheaper to procure and operate. This made it a popular choice for export. In addition to its air superiority role, the F-5 can also be used forground-attack missions. The F-5A entered service in the early 1960s, and over 800 were produced for US allies during the Cold War. The United States Air Force did not need a light fighter at the time, but it did acquire around 1,200 Northrop T-38 Talon trainer aircraft based on Northrop’s N-156 fighter design.

In 1972, Northrop introduced the second-generation F-5E Tiger II after winning the International Fighter Aircraft Competition. This upgrade included more powerful engines, larger fuel capacity, improved wing area and leading edge extensions, air-to-air refueling, and better avionics. The F-5E Tiger II was mainly used by American allies and is still in service for training exercises. It has beenused in various roles, including air and ground attack, and was extensively used in the Vietnam War. Production ended in 1987with a total of 1,400 Tiger IIs built. Hawthorne, California produced more than 3,800 F-5s and the related T-38 advanced trainer aircraft. The United States Navy and Marine Corps use the F-5N/F variants as adversary trainers. As of 2021, there are over 400 aircraft in service.

The F-5 was developed into a dedicated reconnaissance aircraft, the RF-5 Tigereye. Additionally, it served as the foundation for the Northrop YF-17 and the F/A-18 naval fighter aircraft through a series of design studies. The Northrop F-20 Tigershark, an advanced variant to replace the F-5E, was eventually canceled due to a lack of export customers.
