COBI USS Iowa History:

USS Iowa (BB-61) is a retired battleship, the lead ship of her class, and the fourth in the United States Navy to be named after the state of Iowa. Owing to the cancellation of the Montana-class battleships, Iowa is the last lead ship of any class of United States battleships and was the only ship of her class to have served in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.

During World War II, she carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt across the Atlantic to Mers El Kébir, Algeria, en route to a meeting of vital importance in 1943 in Tehran with Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Britain and Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union. When transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, Iowa shelled beachheads at Kwajalein and Eniwetok in advance of Allied amphibious landings and screened aircraft carriers operating in the Marshall Islands. She also served as the Third Fleet flagship, flying Admiral William F. Halsey’s flag at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. During the Korean War, Iowa was involved in raids on the North Korean coast, after which she was decommissioned into the United States Navy reserve fleets, better known as the “mothball fleet.” She was reactivated in 1984 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan and operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets to counter the recently expanded Soviet Navy. In April 1989, an explosion of undetermined origin wrecked its No. 2 gun turret, killing 47 sailors.

Iowa was decommissioned for the last time in October 1990 after 19 total years of active service, and was initially stricken from the Naval Vessel Register (NVR) in 1995, before being reinstated from 1999 to 2006 to comply with federal laws that required retention and maintenance of two Iowa-class battleships. In 2011 Iowa was donated to the Los Angeles–based non-profit Pacific Battleship Center and was permanently moved to Berth 87 at the Port of Los Angeles in 2012, where she was opened to the public as the USS Iowa Museum.

Really excited to be able to add one of the Iowa class battleships to my collection. The new planes with this set also stand out with this model. Look forward to building more ships from Cobi.

An absolutely amazing set. Not only does the executive edition allow you to build one of the 4 Iowa Class battleships, but there’s subtle differences between them, like the square vs round raider array; little details they include so that the model is as accurate as can be. Looks great next to my Bismarck.

5 star set. Instructions good. Pay attention to color! Parts high grand. Clutch power very good. Was lacking 5 years ago. Buy the new sets. Battleship well designed. Very study! Thanks to Cobi. All pad prints too!

  4. Brandon (verified owner)

Truly happy I finally have myself the Iowa-class set!! A big plus for being able to make all 4 ships if I want to as well! Probably the longest of the ship sets Cobi has right now, so you’ll want a large enough space to display it. Thank you WarBricks for being a reliable seller, will buy more soon enough!

  5. joshcadelina98 (verified owner)

The Iowa class is so iconic, I had to buy ALL 4 to complete the entire class. The models are even bigger than the Bismarck and HMS Hood!

  6. Alex K (verified owner)

The USS Iowa 4 in 1 is the one you want. This set is very good and relatively quick to build. I have mine built as Iowa. For the historical folks that can’t quite identify the camo scheme; from what I’ve researched this seems to be Measure 22. Overall probably my favorite COBI warship as of current.

  7. Jared Gibson (verified owner)

Still a very good set, unfortunately Cobi still haven’t really fixed the turrets from the original Iowa set. You don’t really notice unless you look for it, though.

  8. Joshua R. Taylor (verified owner)

Another win from Cobi and Warbricks! I got a great deal from warbricks on this set. The build itself was awesome. No missing pieces! I look forward to my next Cobi from Warbricks.

  9. HK (verified owner)

Amazing set! You can make all 4 versions with Exec version. Highly recommended!!

  10. Kevin Johnson (verified owner)

Haven’t started building this yet, but it’s massive, I believe the largest or one of the largest Cobi ship models. Can’t wait to start building.

  11. Manuel Rojas (verified owner)

This massive ship was the third battleship I’ve done with Cobi. It was by far the best and most fun of any build yet. The essence of the Iowa class ships is in every detail. Highly recommended!!!

  12. Ryan G (verified owner)

Over 3 feet long. Incredible hull shape. Really neat hidden area under the rear turret. Love it on the shelf. USA USA!

  13. Ken Weston (verified owner)

Absolutely beautiful kit. And this thing is big. I built it up as the New Jersey to go with my Missouri. Warbricks staff is awesome and very helpful. I will continue to get my Cobi products from them.

  14. Ambarish Banerjee (verified owner)

This is the best Cobi ship set. I particularly how narrow the bow of the ship is, captures the design very well. And it is 3 feet long. Anyway, my favorite ship.

  15. djade101 (verified owner)

  16. djade101 (verified owner)

    Awesome model.

  17. Beardo (verified owner)

Incredible representation of the mightiest Battleship ever built by the USA. The Iowa class battleship. 4 were constructed. This set comes with 4 Flags so one can choose from either of the Iowa, New Jersey, Wisconsin,or Missouri.
Fun to build and will give hours of enjoyment as it unfolds before your eyes. It’s very impressive when completed!
