German STUG IV (Sturmgeschütz IV) History:

The Sturmgeschütz IV (STUG IV) was a variant of the Panzer IV utilized by Germany in the latter part of World War II. Its purpose was to serve as a tank destroyer and was similar to the successful StuB III variant of the Panzer III. These StuB models were employed exclusively as tank destroyers in German formations and tactical planning during the final two years of the war, providing supplementary capability to the diminishing tank force available to the German army on both the Eastern and Western fronts.

STUG IV Development

The Sturmgeschütz IV was created by Krupp as an assault gun. To build it, they utilized the Panzerkampfwagen IV chassis and a slightly modified Sturmgeschütz III superstructure, as they did not manufacture Panzerkampfwagen IIIs.

After the Battle of Kursk, Hitler saw reports of the StuG III performing better than the Panzer IV in certain roles. He decidedto switch Panzer IV production to “Panzerjäger IV” production. The new version would mount the same 7.5 cm L/70 used for the Panther. Vomag built a prototype Panzerjäger IV with a 7.5 cm L/48 gun, which later became the Jagdpanzer IV Ausf. F. StuG IV may not have been produced if it weren’t for the disruption of StuG III production and scarce supply of the 7.5 cm L/70 gun for the Jagdpanzer IV.

The Alkett Factory, ( Where the StuG III was manufactured),  suffered damage from an Allied bombing raid in November 1943. Production of the Stug III fell from 255 vehicles in October to 24 in December. A conference was held on December 6-7, 1943 to find a solution. Hitler approved the idea of mounting the Stug  III superstructure on a Panzer IV chassis to create the StuG IV. It was lighter than the StuG III Ausf. G and had a box compartment for the driver. Hitler was shown the StuG IV between December 16-17, 1943 and approved it. StuG IV production was given full support to make up for the low StuG III production.

From December 1943 to May 1945, Krupp built 1,111 StuG IVs, in early 1944 Alkett built 30 Stug IVs using new Panzer IV chassis sent from Nibelungenwerk. While the number is smaller than the 10,000+ StuG III, the StuG IV supplemented and fought along with StuG III during 1944–45, when they were most needed.
