P-47 Thunderbolt History:

The P-47 Thunderbolt is an iconic American WWII fighter aircraft, known for its distinct shape and role in both air campaigns against the Axis powers and in other missions. The P-47 had a rich history during World War II, influenced the design of future fighter jets and remains a beloved symbol of freedom to this day. Let’s take a look at some key facts about the P-47’s history.

Origins: The origins of the P-47 date back to March 1940, when the Army Air Corps requested designs for a new long-range single seat fighter (Project 9/11). There were three submissions for this request; the Boeing proposal led by engineer Jake Swirbul was chosen as the winner due to its wide cross-section fuselage and twin engines which allowed it greater fuel storage space than single engine competitors.

Production: Production of the first batch of 290 Thunderbolts began soon after. Over time more powerful variants were developed with larger engines to reduce weight while maintaining power, better armament capability and better maintenance access into a cramped engine area. It took time but eventually around 15,000 aircraft were produced at multiple locations within the United States throughout 1942 and 1945.

In Combat: Upon entering service with combat units, the Thunderbolt quickly gained fame as an effective dive bomber capable of dropping large bombs at high speed without losing altitude too quickly or becoming unmanageable in recovery — allowing pilots more time on target even though they’d be considerably vulnerable during their run! This allowed pilots great accuracy when engaging ground targets such as tank columns or shoreline positions as part of Allied victory over Nazi Germany in late 1944 onward – early 1945.

The armored cockpit was relatively roomy and comfortable and the bubble canopy introduced on the P-47D offered good visibility. Nicknamed the “Jug” owing to its appearance if stood on its nose, the P-47 was noted for its firepower as well as its ability to resist battle damage and remain airworthy. A present-day U.S. ground-attack aircraft, the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, takes its name from the P-47.

The P-47 pilot has legs, unlike our poor Harrier driver! We’ll soon need to build a Cobi annex to display all our Cobi models.
