 Mitsubishi A6 M2 Zero History

The Mitsubishi A6M “Zero” is a long-range carrier-based fighter aircraft formerly manufactured by Mitsubishi Aircraft Company, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945. The A6M was designated as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 carrier fighter, or the Mitsubishi A6M Rei-sen. The A6M was usually referred to by its pilots as the Reisen, “0” being the last digit of the imperial year 2600 (1940) when it entered service with the Imperial Navy. The official Allied reporting namewas “Zeke”, although the name “Zero” (from Type 0) was used colloquially as well.

The Zero is considered to have been the most capable carrier-based fighter in the world when it was introduced early in World War II, combining excellent maneuverability and very long range. The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service also frequently used it as a land-based fighter.

In early combat operations, the Zero gained a reputation as a dogfighter, achieving an outstanding kill ratio of 12 to 1, but by mid-1942 a combination of new tactics and the introduction of better equipment enabled Allied pilots to engage the Zero on generally equal terms. By 1943, the Zero was less effective against newer Allied fighters due to design limitations. It lacked hydraulic boosting for its ailerons and rudder, rendering it extremely difficult to maneuver at high speeds. By 1944, with Allied fighters approaching the A6M levels of maneuverability and consistently exceeding its firepower, armor, and speed, the A6M had largely become outdated as a fighter aircraft. However, as design delays and production difficulties hampered the introduction of newer Japanese aircraft models, the Zero continued to serve in a front-line role until the end of the war in the Pacific. During the final phases, it was also adapted for use in kamikaze operations. Japan produced more Zeros than any other model of combat aircraft during the war.

This was a fun build. I was a bit confused early on when the wings were hinged but it made sense later on. Since all the pieces minus just a few are all the same color that added some challenge. Overall impressed with the dimensions and the consistent method by which Cobi designs their sets.

A great fun and easy build. Enjoyed this set immensely. Would highly recommend it. War Bricks was a pleasure to work with..

As the aerospace education officer for the local Civil Air Patrol squadron I often use Cobi sets to engage my cadets since many of them love to build brick kits. The Zero model is especially well done with the smooth trailing edge of the wings to the excellent way of creating the wing dihedral.

Very beautiful and a historic plane. And the all white color makes it look very nice. I wish there was a red circle on the underside of the wings as well, just like the real plane.

  6. Alex C. (verified owner)

Really great set! The dihedral and curved leading edge are executed to perfection and really make the kit look like it’s not a brick model. Great job Cobi!

The zero is a solid build. The new landing gear is an upgrade along with the larger size. Notice cobi is really improving their minifigs. The new printing machines are printing more of the fig parts. The facial expressions are much better. The best part for the figs are the high boots which match the 1/32 and especialy the 1/35 scale. I am not fond of 1/28. Not enough detail and figs are too small. Ugly. Note the new 1/35 and 1/32 scale kits are really good.

  8. Laura Jinkerson (verified owner)

These planes are better than any of the other brick sets out there.

Looks great on display and tough enough to play with.
