Grumman F4F Wildcat History:

The Grumman F4F Wildcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft that entered service in 1940 with the United States Navy, and the British Royal Navy where it was initially known as the Martlet. First used by the British in the North Atlantic, the Wildcat was the only effective fighter available to the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during the early part of the Second World War. The disappointing Brewster Buffalo was withdrawn in favor of the Wildcat and replaced as aircraft became available.

With a top speed of 318 mph (512 km/h), the Wildcat was outperformed by the faster 331 mph (533 km/h)), more maneuverable, and longer-ranged Mitsubishi A6M Zero. US Navy pilots, including John “Jimmy” Thach, a pioneer of fighter tactics to deal with the A6M Zero, were greatly dissatisfied with the Wildcat’s inferior performance against the Zero in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway. The Wildcat has a claimed air combat kill-to-loss ratio of 5.9:1 in 1942 and 6.9:1 for the entire war.

Lessons learned from the Wildcat were later applied to the faster F6F Hellcat. While the Wildcat had better range and maneuverability at low speed, the Hellcat could rely on superior power and high speed performance to outperform the Zero. The Wildcat continued to be built throughout the remainder of the war to serve on escort carriers, where the larger and much heavier Hellcat could not be used.

One of my favorite Cobi builds. I’ve enjoyed building several different modern and WWII aircraft kits. This one though, just looks so close to real. The blue is quite striking. I don’t think there’s a lot of new ground covered as far as building technique other than maybe the landing gear. The pieces that form the outside of the aircraft contribute greatly to transforming the brick built frame into a more accurate rendition of the beautiful and deadly F4F Wildcat. I would definitely recommend this build to my fellow hobbyist. As always, a great buying experience from Warbricks.

One of the best of Cobi’s World War II fighter planes. The level of detail is excellent. I am particularly impressed with the intricate detail of the landing gear. The overall look is striking. Fantastic!

  3. Stephen Kindy (verified owner)

Another great set from COBI. It was a joy to build. It has some unique building elements making it different from other COBI WII planes. The finished product looks amazing. I would highly recommend this set.

Another great set from COBI and another fun build overall. A few steps are a bit fiddley or tricky but overall I’m very happy with this model set!

  5. schwarzbruder88 (verified owner)

A great set for one of my most loved aircraft of ww2. I am also very impressed by the S/H from Warbricks, box came in great condition, makes me not want to throw it away lol

  6. Ben (verified owner)

Great brick sets. Warbricks makes it easy and convenient to buy them.

  7. Steve Markowsky (verified owner)

Great build from Cobi as always. Highlight though is the great customer service provided by Warbricks.Com. Best company to work with!

  8. Michael Reitz (verified owner)

An excellent build of a great aircraft. It truly captures the stocky look of the Wildcat. As always it makes a good focal point for my aerospace education classes. Civil Air Patrol cadets can really relate to block kits, so this beautiful plan really grabs their attention.

  9. Frederick Donikowski (verified owner)

Excellent sturdy build. Cobi did not skimp on parts. Underneath white is a bonus. Shape is right on. I like the pilot’s face mask and oxygen hose. The pad printing is great. The insignias are of early WWII. The beautiful blue is of late WWII. The parts fit nicely together. Rather difficult build. Be careful and patient. A must kit for pacific theater.

  10. Austin Baker

Hello! This is my personal review. I rated the aircraft based on realism, quality, and durability.

    Pros:
    1. It is absolutely stunning. The quality, realism, and durability is top notch
    2. The size is proportional
    3. Most of the parts fit together quite nicely, with minimal cracks or bending.
    4. The wing dihedral is stable and doesn’t easily snap loose, contrary to previous corsair sets.

    Cons:
    1. The nosepiece is flimsy and easily comes off. I had to swap the 2×2 that it sits on for a different brand that would fit better (LEGO 2×2 plates fit very securely in this case). The studs on the given 2×2 are too small and need to be enlarged to ensure a tighter fit. It might be a manufacturing glitch, I don’t know.
    2. The cockpit has no seat, the pilot is only held up by the air hose
    3. The landing gear is a bit quirky to build, and it is fixed. The landing gear on the real plane was retractable.

Overall rating: 10/10. It has a couple of downsides, but overall I would say it is a worthy investment. This masterpiece is a must-have!

Another wonderful model from Cobi and Warbricks. They ship quickly and I have never had any issues with any shipments or items. Keep up the good work!

  13. zandersmom96 (verified owner)

My friend loves this set. It’s a good set itself but it’s his first so obviously he messed up.

  14. Patrick (verified owner)

A great looking addition to my other Pacific themed sets. A pilot seat would have been nice though since all my other planes got one. Also they accidentally gave me two of the same printed pieces for the left side. Fortunately Cobi customer service sent the missing one to me in about a week so its all good now.

  15. goobersqueaky1 (verified owner)

Loved the model. Cobi is by far the best for building blocks imo. Fast shipping and will be coming back here for all my cobi purchases.
