Battleship Bismarck History:

In the course of the warship’s eight-month career under its sole commanding officer, Captain Ernst Lindemann, Bismarck conducted only one offensive operation, lasting 8 days in May 1941, codenamed Rheinübung.

The ship, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, was to break into the Atlantic Ocean and raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain. The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. At the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the battlecruiser HMS Hood initially engaged Prinz Eugen, probably by mistake, while HMS Prince of Wales engaged Bismarck. In the ensuing battle Hood was destroyed by the combined fire of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, which then damaged Prince of Walesand forced her retreat. Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits to force an end to the raiding mission.

The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. Two days later, heading for occupied France to effect repairs, Bismarck was attacked by 16 obsolescent Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one scored a hit that rendered the battleship’s steering gear inoperable.

In her final battle the following morning, the already-crippled Bismarck was severely damaged during a sustained engagement with two British battleships and two heavy cruisers, was scuttled by her crew, and sank with heavy loss of life. Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. The wreck was located in June 1989 by Robert Ballard, and has since been further surveyed by several other expeditions. This was my first Cobi battleship and couldn’t be more pleased with it. The build was a lot of fun, not too repetitive and a lot of different building techniques. The detail in the finished set is amazing and the quality is top notch. It’s probably my most favorite set out of all my Lego and Cobi sets. I want to get all of the battleships now. Warbricks was was great as well. It shipped right away and I got it in only 3 days.

Cobi has been redesigning the Bismarck model on a yearly basis. Older versions relied heavily on stickers. The 2020 version has been modernized with molded anchors, printed pieces, and one of the newer plane molds. The quality of Cobi pieces have always been high. Across my nine previous ship kits, I have only had one malformed piece.

Fit and consistency are great, and the ship is a great entry to historical ship building for people less comfortable with jumping into traditional model building. What you see is exactly what you get.

I haven’t even built the set yet, but I can tell that it’s going to be awesome. Warbricks is an awesome store and I will definitely be purchasing from them again. Thanks to the Warbricks team!

My very first COBI set, and my very first set from Warbricks! Perfect set. I plan to buy more from Warbricks in the future.

  8. James (verified owner)

The Bismarck was the largest battleship ever built in Europe, and I’m glad I could add such a powerful model to my fleet. However, I felt a bit underwhelmed at the size of the completed 2,030pc model. This is especially apparent with the 2,510pc Enterprise and the 2,840pc Titanic. But the Bismarck held his own and certainly was a fun project. Save a Yamato Executive Edition for me, or a Hood.

What a present. I purchased the Bismark for a display in my classroom (I teach US History and a class just on WWII). My daughter does the assembling and it becomes a great family event.

  15. Jason Chen (verified owner)

This is a great set and easily recognizable as the specific ship from the silhouette. Note the size of the finished product, plan to have a substantial area to display it.
