COBI SD KFZ 251/9 Stummel History:
The SD Kfz Stummel (“stump”) was an armored reconnaissance vehicle developed and used by the German Army in World War II. It was based on the same chassis as the standard Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track, but had a new type of drive mechanism that allowed it to turn on its own axis without needing to make any wider turns. The Stummel has since become something of a cult classic among military collectors, due to its unique design and storied service history in some of the most famous battles of World War II.
Design Features
Originally designed for reconnaissance duties, the SD Kfz Stummel featured several key modifications from its predecessor. It had a longer wheelbase than other half-tracks, as well as wider treads for improved traction. Â Both features enabled it to traverse tough terrain more easily and make better use of limited space. Finally, it had a pivoting drive system which allowed it to turn 360 degrees simply by driving forward or backward in one direction with minor adjustments from the steering wheel or brakes. Its weight was heavier than other vehicles at 10 tons unloaded and 12 tons when loaded up with crew and equipment, leading to somewhat slower speeds on difficult terrain compared to lighter vehicles such as jeeps or tanks.
Armament
The SD Kfz also featured slightly different armaments than earlier vehicles in this range such as the more powerful but heavier SdKfz 123 variant artillery halftrack series; instead it was outfitted with a 75 mm L/24 low velocity gun, using the same pedestal gun mount employed on the StuG III. Nicknamed “Stummel” (“stump”). In 1944, a revised modular gun mount was introduced to facilitate production that also incorporated a coaxial MG42.

This model has a lot of features and a lot of detail, which makes it great for play and/or display. The cannon and machine gun can both move and the rear doors open. The cannon is quite detailed, even including what looks like the sight/optics. For the scale, the amount of moving parts and detail is impressive. The camo pattern is nice, too. COBI has quite a few German halftracks on the market, and I chose to get this one because of the features mentioned above. I wasn’t disappointed. Warbricks provided great service and fast shipping like always.

Just like most of the other Halftrack Sets Cobi has, this one has a great interior.
I have the discontinued 1:28 scale gray 251 Stummel. While that one might be larger, this one is a huuuuuuge improvement between the two. The gun-breach on this one is one of Cobis better looking ones as well.
If you really want a 251/9, this one is the way to go.
