Elco PT-109 Torpedo Boat History:

The PT-109 was an 80’ Elco PT boat (patrol torpedo boat) last commanded by Lieutenant (junior grade) John F. Kennedy, future United States President, in the Pacific theater during World War II. His actions to save his surviving crew after the sinking of PT-109 made him a war hero. PT-109s ramming by a Japanese destroyer contributed to Kennedy’s long-term back problems and required months of hospitalization at Chelsea Naval Hospital. Kennedy’s postwar campaigns for elected office referred often to his service on PT-109.

PT-109 belonged to the PT-103 class, hundreds of which were completed between 1942 and 1945, by Elco, in Bayonne, New Jersey. The ship’s keel was laid 4 March 1942, as the seventh motor torpedo boat (MTB) of the 80-foot-long (24 m) class built by Elco, and was launched on 20 June and delivered to the Navy on 10 July 1942 to be fitted out in the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn.

PT-109 could accommodate a crew of three officers and 14 enlisted men, with the typical crew size between 12 and 14. Fully loaded, it displaced 56 tons.

The Elco boats were the largest PT boats operated by the U.S. Navy during World War II. At 80 feet (24 m) and 40 tons, they had strong wooden hulls, constructed of two layers of 1-inch (2.5 cm) mahogany planking, excellent for speed, but provided very limited protection in combat.

This is an amazing rendition of JFK’s famous PT-109, filled with great detail down to the Packard logo on the engines.

  2. Jeff (verified owner)

Set was fun to assemble and looks great on the shelf

  3. lukem200 (verified owner)

This was amazing to put together and a very nice display piece. It’s bigger than anticipated and far more sturdy than I initially thought. A few things I would change though is more connection points on the engines, as they wobble quite a bit, and I wish Cobi would have made a detailed Lazarette (room behind engines) instead of leaving it empty. Besides that I think this set is a must have, if you have the money of course.

  4. Robyn (verified owner)

This set is big, beautiful, and fun to play with. A challenge to build and a great display piece.

A very nicely detailed set for the size of it, and man is it huge! It’s an awesome display piece that has a lot of value for your money. The only thing I could say that needs more work on behalf of Cobi would be a printed control panel in the engine room instead of a black tile, and the three engines feel very unstable in there. I also would have loved to see some extra parts like maybe food cans, random tools, ammunition or something to fill the aft storeroom because Cobi left it empty. It’s also missing a forward crews head and a chart room, however that’d make things way to cramped and just wouldn’t work with this scale. It’s a really awesome set, and as someone who’s obsessed with boats and ships from World War 2, its overall a must have! A huge shout out to also Warbricks for the awesome communication and shipping!!!

Very nice set. The first cobi set with interiors.

  7. Micah W (verified owner)

    I had fun building this.
I knew nothing about the history of the boat before building it. I did have some trouble getting the engines to stay in place. I ended up using some clear glue and that did the trick

  8. zekintha25 (verified owner)

A great build with many details. I learned about the PT-109 when writing a term paper about PT boats many years ago. An excellent model for history fans.

This is perhaps my favorite set I have gotten from Cobi, and it certainly makes sense. The PT-109 is absolutely MASSIVE. Its around 2~ feet long and around 10 inches tall (on the stand) its a very hefty build. I belive it weighs somewhere around a good 6-7~ pounds. The set itself is built incredibly well, it is a very sturdy design and features a full interior and great exterior with a sturdy stand. The build took quite some time but was very interesting and fun all the way through. The set makes an excellent display piece.

Another great looking kit from Cobi! Looks fantastic when finished, only issue was with the 3 motors in back rather loose fitting, but it is for display. Enjoyed this build.

  11. Sean Morrison (verified owner)

A great build, this set has excellent detail inside and out.

  12. James Turner (verified owner)

great model. all problems while building were my own. model is very high quality

  13. doyenlolz (verified owner)

Another cool model, and this one has a full interior. Depending on your skill level, this build is anywhere from the majority of your day to the whole weekend.

My only con about this set is: Its a magnet for kids, every single one wants to look inside of it. So, make sure to keep this one out of reach.

  14. Nam Mai (verified owner)

What a deal from COBI!! Got this set when the price dropped to $99. This is the best model so far in my COBI selections. It is well built, sturdy, detailed, and looks great on the shelf. This one is the must buy for sure.
